Introduction to
Four Pillars of Destiny Astrology

By David Twicken

What is my destiny? Will marriage, wealth and happiness be abundant? What astrological influences may affect my health? These deeply important aspects of life have led people to seek professionals for thousands of years for advice and guidance. In Asia, systems of divination evolved which reveals one's destiny, luck and fate. From emperor to common person it was normal practice to consult oracles for guidance. I Ching and Feng Shui practitioners, Palm Readers, Face Readers and Astrologers were consulted for guidance about every aspect of life.

There are many systems of Chinese Astrology, but the most popular in modern times is Four Pillars of Destiny. Four Pillars was popularized in the Tang Dynasty, 581-907 AD by Li Xu Zhong. He used the Year of Birth Chinese Zodiac Animal as the centerpiece. In the Song Dynasty, 960-1127, Xu Zi Ping radically changed the applications of the Four Pillars.

One major change was a shift from the earthly year branch to the heavenly day stem representing the centerpiece of a person. This method is practiced today and is referred as Ba Zi, Zi Ping or Four Pillars of Destiny. It is a highly accurate divination system for predicting fortune, luck, personality, health, romance, marriage, wealth and family relations.

The common usage of Chinese Astrology in the Western community has been evaluating attributes of the Chinese Zodiac animals. This analysis captures only the birth year aspect of a person's life — it does not include the Hour, Day, Month or future cycles of time. In Zi Ping astrology all cycles of time are evaluated to obtain a complete picture of a person and his or her life path. Calculating a birth chart or "Four Pillars" is the initial step in performing a Four Pillars of Destiny analysis. This information is obtained from the ancient 10,000-Year Chinese calendar and includes the influence of the Hour, Day, Month and Year.

Because the complete Chinese calendar has been largely inaccessible in the West the deepest aspects of Chinese Astrology have not been revealed. A "Chinese Astrology Calendar" consists of two major aspects for each segment of time: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. I have developed an English translation of the Chinese calendar, "Chinese Astrology Calendar Made Easy". This calendar is user-friendly, allowing easy access to Zi Ping Astrology. In a short period of time you will be able to construct a Four Pillars birth chart in less than 60 seconds.

The key to learning this ancient system is the chapter on Five Elements — it is the foundation to this system. With a strong understanding of the Five Elements you are prepared to deeply understand this powerful system of divination. Welcome to the fascinating world of Chinese Astrology!
